Isometric Exercises

isometric
A discussion of exercises would not be complete without the mention of a special type of exercises called Isometrics. This is a type of exercise that has been popular now and then for the past 60 years. It involves using one group of muscles at a time by pulling or pushing against resistance. For example tightening your abdominal muscles and letting them pull against themselves, or pressing your hands
together and letting your pectoral muscles (the chest muscles that pull your arms in toward your body) pull against each other. They are used in Gymnastic training as well by using some Gym equipment. A popular body-building program, designed by Charles Atlas (6) many years ago made use of that principle and was highly successful, but don’t count on that to help you lose weight.

To get help from exercises to lose weight, you need to burn lots and lots of calories, only possible by using the very largest muscles in your body, the quadriceps, calf muscles and abdominals. That is why walking (using both groups of leg muscles) and swimming, (using your abdominals, back muscles, and muscles of both arms)can both be very helpful.

Body building requires more intense exercise of various kinds, but in most cases will add weight (muscle) rather than lose weight (fat). Many studies have shown that it takes a lot of ordinary exercise (walking, running, working out at the gym, and even playing an active sport like basketball) to burn enough calories to lose a significant amount of weight or fat. Did you know that a fast food meal like McDonald’s Big Mac, Large Coke, and Large Fries contains no less than 1,600 calories? No wonder it is hard to “work off” excess calories! It’s obvious that exercise is only part of the solution to weight loss. This shows you the importance of proper nutrition! If you don’t eat the right foods, you will have a hard time losing weight with or without exercise! Therefore, only a select form of exercise will help you lose weight.
